Austin Stadler – Architect-In-Training

Art and architecture run in Austin’s family and ever since he was young, he wanted to pursue a career where he could design and create.

A native of Royal Oak, Mich., Austin first studied civil engineering at Michigan State University before transferring to Lawrence Technological University where he earned his bachelor of science degree in architecture in 2021. That same year, he heeded his professional calling and accepted a position with Drewett Works.

Austin says he is drawn to architecture for “the art of it all.” He enjoys and appreciates art in all forms, and architecture just happens to be the best one!

How did you become interested in architecture?  My paternal grandfather was an architect and my father was/is an artist. Growing up around art in all mediums, visiting museums and experiencing art/design in so many forms really fostered my appreciation for it. Ever since I was young I knew I wanted to create and design, and as I got older I found architecture to be the most comprehensive experience of art and design. Thanks to my mom for giving me all the left-brain power to get to where I am today.

What about architecture drew you to the field? Too many reasons to count. To make it short and sweet, I love the ability to create a work of art that someone can experience with all their senses, art that leaves an impression. Being a part of something meaningful to others, shaping spaces for life to happen and memories to be made is as gratifying as it is beautiful for me.

You’ve won the lottery. How would you spend your time? I would continue to work, but I’ve always wanted to design and make furniture. Having a studio/workshop with all the necessary tools and materials would be where I would love to spend my time.

Least favorite food? I don’t really care for tomatoes—I don’t see what all the hype is about.

Favorite movie genre?  Horror

One life lesson you have learned so far? A little respect, common sense and self-awareness can go a long way.

Favorite movie? So many. I’m a huge movie fan from classic to contemporary.

Who is on your current playlist? Never not in the mood for some Creedence Clearwater Revival

Fireplace or bonfire? Bonfire

Beach or mountains? Somewhere with both “heart eyes”

Epitaph?  “Just passin’ through”
